3.25 miles from Jamesburg, on a diagonal

July 14, 2008, about 6:45 am...

The fire this morning is making it's way down Anastasia Canyon toward Carmel Valley Road in the direction of Poison Oak Hill and the Hastings Reserve.  According to my MODIS map, it's about 3.25 miles from Jamesburg - that's the white line you see in the map above, Jamesburg Circle to the fireline in the canyon  - (3.5 miles from our house), traveling along the southeast wall of the Canyon - a VERY steep area in which to fight fire. It's understandable that the fire must be left to burn out the fuel there.

The air is very smoky this morning. and the dawn had a reddish tinge.

Today, Martha and I are off to work, and I'll be on the road most of the day and evening, so I won't be able to report from Jamesburg in the usual fashion. I'll rely on whatever our contributors can muster up and when I can get to a wireless hotspot, I shall post as often as I can.

Jim Kasson's links to MODIS maps...

I'm having real trouble getting Blogger to be consistent with allowing a click on a map to expand. It has to do with my putting more than one "picture" in a post.

Jim's been gracious enough to put up links so that you can see the data reliably.

"Everything looks OK except there are three more hotspots on the wrong side of the line near White Oaks Camp. They said last night it wasn’t out yet, and either the red dots are backfires, or this confirms it."

The rest of Jim's observations:
  1. Fire is approaching northern fire line between Rattlesnake Camp and Pat Springs Camp.
  2. Broad fire activity south of Rattlesnake Camp.
  3. No new activity above (west of) Carmel Valley Road south of Cahoon Summit.
  4. Divide Camp fire moving slowly.
  5. No new activity west of Miller Mountain.

Also from Jim, here's view of the new hot spots from Poison Oak Hill. Tassajara Road is on the right. Cahoon Summit is in the left middle foreground.

On the road this morning and on the way into town...

On our road  and on the way in to town this morning, Martha and I saw and passed by a total of nearly 75 vehicles - lots of CDF and  out-of-area HotShot (hand) crews... some from Arizona and New Mexico - heading out to Chews Ridge.

We also saw CDF HotShots at the Helibase, pointed toward Arroya Seco, probably heading off to intercept and attack the fire from the Hastings Preserve section of Carmel Valley Road, opposite Poison Oak Hill.

Here's a shot of the Bell Jet Long Ranger spotter aircraft at the Helibase this morning.

Thank you so much for the maps and links. This realy helps me see where the fire is in relation to my house.

You mentioned that some of the Modis dots were on the wrong side of the line. Keep in mind that those dots can be inaccurate by as much as a mile or so. They are only estimates of where the fire is.

How are you getting through the hard road closure?

Thanks for the reminder about the possible MODIS offset error, Bill!

Sheyne, I don't know that I'm getting through the hard closure on the way back, if I return tonight... I have business in the SF Bay Area through tomorrow.

For the meetings, the CHP have been letting people go back and forth from the Mandatory Evacuation zones.

Cachagua Fire has vowed to escort home anyone that wants to come to the meetings and who gets refused re-entry.

These folks have been just GREAT!

Bill, I understand that MODIS can be off, but they've been pretty darned accurate during this fire. Look at the backfires on the northern fire line, and how they march right down the overlayed line. There was a time early in the fire when there was a question of whether the MODIS data data indicated the fire was over the line near Bixby Mtn, but those dots were very close to the line. Last night's dots are about half a mile in.

Still, you're right. They *could* be errors.
