Incident Commander takes a break...

July 3, 2008, about 8:00 pm...

Mike Dietrich, Incident commander for the Basin Complex West Area (Big Sur) takes a break from briefing a large crowd gathered at Carmel Middle School Red Cross Evacuation Center at an evening meeting, lasting about an hour and a half.

This man and his colleagues work the fire day and night from fire camps behind the front lines, then Mike comes down to give people as much information that he can, so that our displaced friends have a clearer picture of what's going on.

Mike conveyed some sad news: a firefighter from an Alaskan unit had to be evacuated and hospitalized, and two homes were lost last night... and possibly a third, which as yet is unconfirmed, above the Ventana Inn.

The information at the briefing was offered both in English and Spanish.

There is a large contingent from the Hispanic community at the Evacuation Center, comprised of service workers from the hotels, lodges and restaurants of Big Sur.

I recorded the entire meeting, which will be available for listening on the KUSP Fire information website tomorrow, July 4th.
