It's a beautiful day! Don't let it slip away!

July 6, 2008, 6:30 am...

On this side of the fire, we awoke this morning to a beautifully clear sky, no ash fall and not a lot of fire equipment traffic up the road through the night.

It's hard to believe that just 10 miles away, on the Big Sur side of the fire, the blaze continues to advance northwest and south, although word is that the breaks on the south are holding:

"At the southern perimeter the fire is above Big Creek and within ½ mile of the forest boundary. This is a fire fight and we’re holding steady. We have aircraft working in this area and it’s slow going." - Incident Commander Mike Dietrich

Two more residences confirmed destroyed in Big Sur - as of today, that makes 22. Still no commercial structures burned, which - though the loss of residences is clearly tragic - the commerce of the community may at least survive.

At last word, according to the SurFire2008 Blog (intense reading, since this information is - in part - provided by sources that remained behind in Big Sur rather than evacuating!) the power in Big Sur went down again, after coming up for short time - having been down for days - due to a tree falling and snapping the lines near the Big Sur Deli. Water is still out in most places and will be restored in stages, according to Mike Dietrich.

As of this morning's report, the fire is now 11% contained, and the projected date for full containment is the end of this month, 7/30/08. For all intents and purposes, no one in the fire service expects this fire to be fully out until the Central Coast sprinkler system comes on (the Fall rains begin).

In case you notice more smoke than usual, here's the reason (from this morning's report):

"Crews will be conducting burning operations to strengthen existing dozer line from the North Coast Road along Dani Ridge to Bottchers Gap. Residents in Palo Colorado and the Carmel Valley area may see significant amounts of smoke." - July 6, 2008 Basin Complex Fire Information, 6:00 am

Tonight at 5:30 pm there's a Fire Information Meeting at Cachagua Community Park. My intent is to provide audio here and from the KUSP website on that meeting. So, if you're following this blog and out of the area, I'll have more for you by about 10 pm tonight.

From Mike Dietrich, Incident Commander of the Big Sur side of the fire, regarding the Jamesburg/Cachagua side of the fire, at last night's Fire information meeting at Carmel Middle School Red Cross Evacuation Center:

"We’re improving the line at the northeastern corner – waiting for the weather conditions to be right to tie the line into the Indians fire."

By the way, the Western Trails Network is another source of fire maps meant to be used with Google Earth. They offer infrared fire line and intensity maps on their website.
