Midnight at the Oasis, put your Huey to bed...

July 4, 2008, about 1:30 am...

On the way home after finishing hours of post-production work on the audio from the Big Sur Fire Information meeting, I notice a light on the pasture where the Helibase is located - on the Eaton Ranch - at the intersection of Tassajara Road and Carmel Valley Road.

It looks like few of us are getting much sleep tonight as a Forest Service chopper crew does some late-night homework on their SuperHuey.

This is all pretty awful... I'm unclear, Kelly, how close is the fire to your home at this point, and what direction is it moving? According to BBC reports, it would appear your area has already been evacuated. Clearly not. Could you include a basic map showing your location and the fire zone?

Jeff, it really is awful, and especially for Big Sur. Looking at the faces of those who evacuated, listening to Mike Dietrich describe the situation in Pfeiffer and behind Ventana... that was heart wrending!

I posted an update to where the fire is in relation to us. We are the yellow pushpin at the top of the white line. The fire is still between 5 and 6 miles away.

During the Kirk blaze, the flame front got to within a mile and a half, nearly over the ridge behind our house. The ash fall was like snow.

Thanks for checking on us, Jeff-ji!!! *hugssssss*
