A tactical shift...

July 8, 2008, about 9:00 am...

The air is thick with smoke this morning and the heat of the day is already developing. On the way to town, the sheer volume of smoke is disconcerting - especially after seeing the fire on the ridge last night - so, I worry a bit.

As I reach Sleepy Hollow on Carmel Valley Road, to new signs appear indicating that Carmel Valley Road is closed from Sleepy Hollow on out toward Greenfield.

The valley is filled with smoke as well, and my picture point shows Uncle Sam Mountain and friends still visible.

Going over Laureles Grade, I notice three busloads of hand crews coming down the grade toward CV village.... what is going on??? Has something developed with the fire overnight??

When I get to work, I call the Public Information Officers for the Indians and the Basin Complex fires, and the answers I get ease my worries.

Here's the Scoop:

Nothing has changed overnight regarding the fire that would cause Jamesburg, Cachagua or Carmel Valley Village to be further threatened.

A tactical shift is in the making, and the firefighters are setting up a Spike Camp - or satellite camp (not a full base camp) - at the airstrip in Carmel Valley Village off Ford Road. This camp could take up to 500 people, but the actual number to be stationed there is not yet certain. The camp should be fully set up by 4:00 pm this afternoon.

The ICs are shifting equipment and crews from the Greenfield area and adding this end of Carmel Valley Road as an additional "entry point," in order to be closer to the fire.

The flames that I photographed last night, from the turnout area near Sky Ranch entrance, was the continuation of "blacklining" efforts (the cross-hatch xxxxxxxxxx patterns indicating fire breaks on the tactical maps of the fire), in order to further contain the burn.

I'll have pictures of the satellite camp and more on the road closure - which appears to be a "soft" closure (drive through out of volition and no "checkpoint" monitoring as of 9:00 am this morning... but, plan to have some ID ready to show, if the Sheriff posts a checkpoint!), at Sleepy Hollow, later.

UPDATE from today's Fire Information News Release: "Carmel Valley Road will be open to residents only from Arroyo Seco Road to Sleepy Hollow Road."

The fire is now 23% contained!
