The responders have been putting up signs like these along the road, designating "DP"s or Drop Points.
Drop points are so-named, because when you put the point of a pin into a map, then you've "dropped" a point of reference. These numbered DPs are associated with the fire maps the planners and crews are using and indicate places to meet or stage crew and equipment.
In addition, mile markers have gone up designating the distance from the Tassajara Road/Carmel Valley road intersection.
A number of years ago, an overstimulated county employee, driving a side mower, came by and took out many of the roadside reflectors and mile markers on Tassajara Road. My guess is that those signs cost about $100 taxpayer bucks apiece, so to say that I was non-plussed about it wouldn't have done justice to my feelings at the time!
In any case, these markers obviously have an entirely different purpose.
