At the Evacuation Center, Carmel Middle School...

July 2, 2008, about 7:35 pm...

KUSP asked me to stop by the Red Cross Evacuation Center, and - if appropriate - interview some of the Big Sur evacuees for a short radio piece in the morning.

Martha and I drove to the center on the way home and we stopped in, taking the measure of the mood and checking out the activity. The Red Cross was busy placing those who were displaced to homes where the owners - our friends and neighbors on the Central Coast - had offered a warm bed and a place to stay for the night.

There were about 300 or so cars parked around the school and Red Cross kitchen trailers were planning to serve up warm stuff for those who needed it.

I didn't think it was a good idea this first evening to conduct an interview; but, I did run into a former "programmer" - DJ or radio program host - who used to do a noon-centric music show called the "Open Road."  JT and Robin have great taste in music and they shared it with the listening audience of KUSP.

Well, there was JT Mason, now a Red Cross volunteer, a bit tired after putting in many hours helping folks to be a little more comfortable in a tough time. JT is a woman who's life is very much about community service, so it didn't surprise me to find her there!
