This is a frightening indication of how quickly things can change.
The business and residential areas of Big Sur are now directly threatened:
"The Basin Complex fire jumped the fire break east of Pfeiffer Big Sur State park. The evacuation was ordered based on the amount of fuel between the fire and residents as well as the need to avoid traffic congestion. A new fire break was being built east of the Ventana Inn.
A mandatory evacuation notice has been expanded again as of noon, Wednesday for the residents of the Big Sur area on both sides of Highway 1 between Andrew Molera State Park (north) and 1 mile south of Lime Kiln State Park. A hard closure is in effect on Highway 1 in the area."
